Lessons from Grandma Myrt

Myrtle Clara Catherine Charlotte Wittkop Hehl raised me. As a child, I marveled at the length of her name. It delighted me to say it, tell my friends about her unique moniker and hear Gramma’s stories time and time again of the women who led her in many different ways to become the woman she was. Gramma Myrt was named after every single one of her grandmothers for a reason.

Why would my great-grandmother, Sadie Wittkop, give her only little girl (of six children) this very big name? I think it was to be sure no one missed the love, lessons and legacy of being a strong woman of character. For me, her name is a call to awareness that I, too, must be a woman of character who leads and leaves an imprint on those I touch.
